Red Kite Roost Spectacle

Length: 2-3 hours

Best time of year: Winter

Best time of day: Two hours before sunset

Possible species: Red Kites! Buzzard, Raven, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Goshawk, Golden Eagle, Fieldfare, Redwing and woodland passerines.

Following the Central Red Kite Reintroduction in the 1990s, the number of Red kites has steadily grown in the Strathearn area. During the Winter they have communal roosts and one of the largest in Scotland is near Comrie and St Fillans. We will watch as the kites come from far and wide to gather in the Winter sky before they decide on which woodland they will spend the night in. This really is a spectacle of nature not to be missed!

There is only a short walk required, on a flat, tarmac track.

Meet at Dalchonzie car park between Comrie and St Fillans (local collection and drop-off can be arranged within a 10 mile radius)

Short walk from car park to watch point

Talk about the UK-wide Red Kite reintroduction programme and Red Kite ecology

Watch the skies as the kites appear from various directions and gather above our heads until it gets too dark or the kites all land to roost

Hot drinks and biscuits provided as it gets cold

Short walk back to the car park and depart

Waterproof clothing

Hat, gloves and scarf

Sensible shoes/boots
